Born in France in 1982, Lou Doillon is a French-British artist based in Paris. A singer songwriter, actress, model and creative collaborator with fashion houses since 1998, Lou Doillon has developed a unique multidisciplinary career. Drawing has been a daily activity for Doillon since childhood. With a fountain pen on Moleskine notebooks, she has been keeping a drawn and written diary since the age of 12. She has often included her drawings in her other crafts, like the vinyl edition of her albums and most of her merchandise on tour. In 2017, Doillon released Drawings, a book published by Astier de Villatte. The release was followed by an exhibition at Maison Molière, in Paris. She subsequently collaborated on a ceramic collection with Astier de Villatte. In 2020, she was invited by book publisher Denoel to illustrate the French edition of Just Kids by Patti Smith. She started as an actress at the age of 5, in Kung Fu Master by Agnes Varda, followed by numerous films directed by Guillaume Canet, Jacques Doillon, Maiwenn, Abel Ferrara etc. In 2010, she created and performed Intimate Letters, a literary theater play based on letters written by Louis-Ferdinand Celine, Marcel Proust and Édith Piaf. She toured for two years, throughout Europe, alone on stage. In 2012, she released her first album, Places, and was awarded Artist of the Year at the Victoires de La Musique. She has since released two more albums, Lay Low and Soliloquy followed by international tours.
Lou Doillon’s Visions From Above are self-portraits of a woman one can identify with and believe in: strong, independent, non-fetishized, free. In a self-empowering and revealing gesture the multi-talented singer songwriter and fashion icon deconstructs the stereotype of the woman as the inaccessible object of desire, historically represented from a male gaze. She draws herself from life, keeping the pose until it becomes untenable, from torso to feet, an angle familiar to our selfie culture, showing fragments of a sexualized body at times, or a body engaged in daily activities, eating and smoking, dressed or undressed as she pleases.
