Romanian-born artist Lydia Dona (b. 1955) lives and works in New York City, creating striking layered works through the use of line and color. The organic forms of exploding spray paint, splattering ink, and sweeping paint strokes contrast with urban and mechanical imagery. By doing so, she incorporates contemporary abstraction and both political and cultural exploration to result in a vibrant and haunting body of work.
Dona received her BFA from the Bezalel Academy of Art in Jerusalem and the School of Visual Arts in New York in 1982 and her MFA from Hunter College in New York in 1984. Dona’s previous exhibitions include: PS. 122 Gallery, New York (2020); L.A. Louver (2018); Thomas Erben Gallery, New York (2017); Unix Gallery, New York (2017); Galerie Laroche/Joncas, Montreal (2014); Hunter College/Times Square Gallery, New York (2012); Chelsea Art Museum (2011);, Meyers School of Art, University of Akron, OH (2006); The Tang Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College, NY (2004); Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY (1998).
