Raphaël Denis (b. 1979) lives and works between Brussels and Paris. An artist-researcher, Denis examines the institutions, histories, and myths surrounding art through sculpture, installation, and archival research. Since 2014, he has developed The Normal Law of Errors, an ongoing series of installations investigating the looting of artworks in France during World War II. Drawing on extensive research in archival centers and online databases, the series addresses the scale and histories of these acts of dispossession and has, in one instance, contributed to the identification of an artwork that had never been restituted. More broadly, his practice considers the art market, museums, and collecting, with particular attention to the destruction, displacement, provenance, and restitution of artworks, and the intersection of individual and collective memory with legal, financial, and institutional concerns.
