Viewing Room

September 21 – October 5, 2024

Bienvenu Steinberg & C is pleased to present Franck Lundangi, the third guest of our  Viewing Room, a curatorial initiative presented alongside the gallery’s main program. Each exhibition spotlights a specific body of work by a single artist for a duration of two weeks, showcaasing  both historical presentations and contemporary artists, with invitations extended to outside institutions and curators for collaboration.

In this intimate installation of nine watercolors, the Angolan-born artist Franck Lundangi manifests his continuous fascination with the interaction of humanity and nature. He has developed a timeless practice, devoid of any direct reference to the present, though not entirely disconnected from it. Each work conjures up a joyous mythology that transcends specific cultures. Mixing images of plants, people, animals and objects from contemporary life, the artist carries the viewer into an fantastical  and spiritual realm. The figures presented return the onlooker’s gaze, offering a chance for silent dialogue. Recurring motifs often transform the human figure into a fantasized object.

Franck  Lundangi  was born in Angola in 1958. After fleeing civil wars there, he eventually settled in France in 1990 and continues to live and work there. Lundangi had his first solo show at Galerie Anne de Villepoix, Paris, in 2017. Reviewing that show for Hyperallergic, Joseph Nechvatal said of Lundangi: "His focus is on universal humanism as a magical discourse full of imaginary and visionary transactions."
